Famous lyricist Kim Eana has become embroiled in controversy after it was belatedly revealed that she used terms from Ilbe (Ilgan Best Storage), an online community known for its far-right tendencies. Kim Eana explained, “I have never entered Ilbe,” but the controversy continues.
Recently, Kim Eana’s past inappropriate word usage has been brought back into the spotlight. In the past, she used derogatory expressions such as ‘Jwajangmyeon’ and ‘Huoguo’ to disparage former President Moon Jae-in in internet broadcast chat rooms, as well as the hateful term ‘Sam-ilhan,’ which implies that women should be beaten once every three days.
As these word usages were revealed late, netizens flooded her with criticism, accusing her of being an Ilbe user. They said things like, “Ordinary people don’t even know words like Jwajangmyeon, Huoguo, or Sam-ilhan,” “I’ve never heard those words in my life,” “Using such words without context and denying being Ilbe,” “It’s like a desperate plea to be recognized,” “Not just one, but several words like that?” “She’s a professional lyricist; she wouldn’t just blurt out words without knowing their meanings,” “Even if she didn’t know the source was Ilbe, didn’t she know the meanings of the words?” “These aren’t even famous Ilbe terms everyone knows,” “I learned those words exist from the chat you sent. Impressive,” and other heated reactions. Some netizens even expressed intentions to boycott songs written by Kim Eana.
As the controversy grew, on the 7th, Kim Eana posted on her Instagram account, “I have never entered Ilbe, and even now I do not know if the source is Ilbe,” adding, “I am also one of the citizens who have been angry since the moment martial law was declared.” However, despite her explanation, netizens continue to criticize her.
Kim Eana has been active as a lyricist since 2003, creating numerous hit songs such as IU’s “You and I” and “Pink Shoes,” Brown Eyed Girls’ “Abracadabra,” and IVE’s “I AM.” She is currently serving as a judge on TV Chosun’s entertainment program “TV Chosun University Song Festival.”
