Nowon-gu, First Local Government to Launch AI Oral Health Screening Service

First Local Government AI Solution-Based Smart Oral Examination Implemented, Providing Precise and Systematic Care
Free Oral Checkups for Nowon-gu Residents Aged 55 and Over to Enable Early Disease Detection and Reduce Financial Burden
Enhancing Residents' Access to Oral Examinations to Achieve Health Equity

Nowon-gu, Seoul (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced that it is implementing the "smart oral examination service" using the "first AI solution by a local government" to improve oral health equity.

The smart oral examination is a project that systematically diagnoses oral health by utilizing an AI solution after taking dental panoramic X-rays.

After taking the X-rays, the data is uploaded to a dedicated cloud, where the AI provides screening results analyzing ▲cavities ▲periapical periodontitis ▲amount of alveolar bone resorption, etc. Based on this, a public health center dentist confirms the presence of diseases through visual examination and provides an oral examination result report.

In particular, if a suspected major disease area is found in the X-ray, with the patient's consent, remote reading can be requested from the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology at Seoul National University Dental Hospital, enabling precise examination and early diagnosis.

Through this project, the district plans to identify the condition of the alveolar bone, detect oral diseases early, help residents voluntarily receive dental treatment, and alleviate economic difficulties by reducing the burden of initial treatment costs.

The smart oral examination project was initially conducted focusing on vulnerable groups during the pilot operation period, but now the target has been expanded to Nowon-gu residents aged 55 and older to increase the number of beneficiaries. The service is completely free of charge and can be used by visiting or making a phone reservation.

The district is making various efforts to eliminate oral health disparities, such as the student and child dental care project and dental treatment for people with disabilities. This is because differences in dental medical accessibility occur depending on economic status, which also affects the level of dental health.

Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon-gu, said, “Oral diseases are related to systemic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, pneumonia, diabetes, and dementia, so regular management is important,” and added, “We will continue to work to lower residents’ psychological barriers to oral examinations and improve accessibility.”
