Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yoo Seong-hoon) provided winter supplies to improve the safety and welfare of recycling collectors.
The district selected recipients among recycling collectors who are registered residents of Geumcheon-gu and actually live there, focusing on elderly individuals aged 65 or older, persons with disabilities as defined by the Disability Welfare Act, and residents deemed in need of support based on a survey.
This year, a total of 108 recycling collectors received winter clothing.
Every year, the district has supported recycling collectors with various items to ensure their safety and convenience. In 2023, sunshade hats, lightweight vests, reflective ropes, and hand warmers were provided in the first and second halves of the year. In 2022, reflective vests, foldable carts, lightweight padded jackets, and safety gloves were supplied.
Yoo Seong-hoon, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, stated, “It is important to create an environment where recycling collectors can work safely. We will continue to prepare support measures that provide practical help according to the seasons. We also ask residents to be considerate and cautious for the safety of collectors on the roads.”
Gangnam-gu Knits ‘Ddasumi Hats’ to Deliver to Elderly and Disabled
Gangnam-gu (Mayor Jo Seong-myeong) is conducting the ‘Ddasumi Hat Knitting’ event from December 6 to January 10, where residents knit hats to be given to the elderly, people with disabilities, and other marginalized groups. Participants will be recruited until January 3.
This event was voluntarily started in 2013 by members of the study club at the Gangnam-gu Women’s Empowerment Center and is now in its 13th year. Last year, 271 scarves were completed and gifted to vulnerable groups to provide warmth during winter.
Those wishing to participate can apply through the Gangnam-gu Women’s Empowerment Center website. The participation fee is 10,000 KRW, and participants can receive kits including yarn and large knitting needles, as well as patterns, either by visiting the center or via delivery. For beginners, ‘Hat Knitting’ instructional videos are available on the center’s website and YouTube, making it easy for anyone to join.
Participants can earn 4 hours of volunteer time per hat and may submit up to two hats. Completed hats should be sent to the center by 6 p.m. on January 10. The finished Ddasumi hats will be distributed to marginalized neighbors through local social welfare facilities. Detailed inquiries about the event can be found on the Gangnam-gu Women’s Empowerment Center website.
Jo Seong-myeong, Mayor of Gangnam-gu, said, “I hope the hats lovingly made by residents become gifts that share warmth even in the cold winter. We will continue to expand various donation events that residents can voluntarily participate in to build a warm community where we live together.”
As the weather gets colder, warm gestures of kindness are increasingly needed for elderly and disabled individuals facing hardships.
