The ‘Urban Vulnerable Area Living Condition Improvement Project’ in Sinheung Village, Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi Province, will be completed in December.
The Urban Vulnerable Area Living Condition Improvement Project is a project aimed at securing a safe residential environment in urban areas with poor living conditions. Focusing on environmental improvement, it repairs walls and retaining walls at risk of collapse, installs security lights, and expands sanitation infrastructure to ensure a basic standard of living. Additionally, it practically improves residents' living environments through the creation of community hub spaces and home repair support.
Sinheung Village in Uijeongbu, after the redevelopment project was canceled in 2012, became an area with many national and public lands and unauthorized buildings. By repairing riverside areas, water supply facilities, and dangerous retaining walls, a safe environment was provided to residents. These efforts significantly increased the satisfaction of local residents.
In particular, this project is recognized as a successful case of urban regeneration that recreated urban spaces together with residents, going beyond simple environmental improvements.
Park Hyosik, head of the Housing Environment Maintenance Team of Gyeonggi Province, said, "The Urban Vulnerable Area Living Condition Improvement Project in Sinheung Village, Uijeongbu, is a good example that enhanced the value of the local community based on resident participation," adding, "We will continue to strive to ensure that the residents of the province can enjoy a safe and happy life."
Meanwhile, Gyeonggi Province plans to encourage more cities and counties to participate in government contests so that residents in vulnerable areas within the province can benefit. It will also provide customized consulting by utilizing the Gyeonggi Province Urban Regeneration Advisory Group, composed of 75 members, to help ensure final selection in the contests.
