The Democratic Party of Korea announced on the 7th that it has proposed an impeachment motion against Minister of the Interior and Safety Lee Sang-min.
On the same day, the Democratic Party stated in a notice, "The impeachment motion against Minister Lee was submitted to the National Assembly's legislative affairs office at 10:30 a.m." This is the second time an impeachment push has been made targeting Minister Lee.
Earlier, on the previous day, Kim Min-seok, the senior supreme council member, asserted, "The National Assembly will promptly impeach Minister Lee," adding, "Minister Lee is strongly suspected of premeditating illegal martial law, distorting the normal proceedings of the State Council meeting that deliberated martial law, and defending illegal martial law."
The Democratic Party plans to report the impeachment motion against Minister Lee at the plenary session on the same day and hold a vote at the plenary session on the 10th. After an impeachment motion is proposed, it must be reported at the first plenary session and voted on within 72 hours after 24 hours have passed.
Previously, opposition parties including the Democratic Party pushed for Minister Lee's impeachment, holding him responsible for the inadequate response to the Itaewon disaster, and the impeachment motion was passed at the plenary session on February 8 of last year.
Subsequently, in July of the same year, the Constitutional Court dismissed the National Assembly's impeachment trial request against Minister Lee, allowing him to return to his duties.
