Samsung Electronics Labor Union Reaffirms Trust in Executive Team... Wage Negotiations for Three Years Likely to Resume Next Year

Jeonsamno Executive Committee New and Reappointment Vote... 62% Approval
Possibility of Wage Negotiations for 2023-2025 Three-Year Period Next Year

The current executive committee of the National Samsung Electronics Labor Union (Jeonsamno) has been revalidated by union members, gaining the qualification to resume wage and collective bargaining agreement (CBA) negotiations with management. Wage negotiations are likely to be resumed next year, crossing over into the new year. If this happens, the three-year CBA covering 2023 to 2025 will be conducted all at once.

According to industry sources on the 6th, the vote on 'Confidence/No Confidence in the Current Jeonsamno Executive Committee' was conducted from the 29th of last month until 2 p.m. on this day, targeting 36,729 Jeonsamno union members. The results showed 62% confidence and 37% no confidence. The current Jeonsamno executive committee can continue CBA negotiations with management without total resignation. The number of Jeonsamno union members accounts for about 29% of Samsung Electronics’ total 128,169 employees and about 47% of the Semiconductor (DS) division’s 77,474 employees.

The vote was decided immediately after the '2023-2024 Wage Negotiation Tentative Agreement' was rejected on the 21st of last month. The agreement included 2 million points on Samsung Family Net (a Samsung Electronics product purchase site for employees) for all employees, an average wage increase rate of 5.1% (3.0% base increase, 2.1% performance increase), among other terms. The 2 million Family Net points are equivalent to 2 million KRW in cash value.

Previously, Jeonsamno announced on their website on the 22nd of last month that if the no-confidence vote exceeded a majority, the executive committee would resign en masse and a new executive committee would be formed through an emergency countermeasure committee. If the confidence vote exceeded a majority, the current executive committee would continue its duties and resume CBA negotiations with management.

The executive committee plans to accelerate negotiations after completing a delegates’ meeting for internal organization. However, wage negotiations are likely to be postponed until next year. The ongoing 2023-2024 wage negotiations are expected to be conducted together with next year’s negotiations. This means that wage negotiations for 2023 to 2025 will be handled all at once next year.
