Korea's First 90km Undersea Cable Connection Between Jeju and Wando... LS Cable & System Achieves It

Completion of Jeju 3-Phase Project... Power Grid Innovation
Commercialization of Korea's Only HVDC Submarine Cable
Integrated Manufacturing and Construction Supply with LS Marine Solution

LS Cable & System announced on the 6th that it has successfully completed the construction project of the country's first voltage-source high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission line between the mainland and Jeju Island, in collaboration with LS Marine Solution.

This project is the "Jeju 3-Link Project," which established an approximately 90 km long subsea power grid connecting Wando, Jeollanam-do, and Jeju. It is regarded as a new milestone for achieving carbon neutrality and stabilizing the power grid.

The Jeju 3-Link Project is the largest subsea cable project in Korea since LS Cable & System carried out the Jeju 2-Link Project in 2009. LS Cable & System won the approximately 230 billion KRW project in KEPCO's international bidding in 2020 and successfully carried out the production and installation of the subsea cable together with LS Marine Solution.

HVDC technology converts alternating current (AC) power generated by renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power into direct current (DC) power, enabling long-distance, large-capacity transmission. DC transmission has lower power loss and does not generate electromagnetic waves, minimizing environmental impact.

In particular, the voltage-source HVDC applied this time allows bidirectional transmission, unlike the conventional current-source type, enabling stable linkage of irregular renewable energy and significantly improving power grid efficiency.

Globally, companies commercializing HVDC subsea cables are limited to some in Europe and Japan, and LS Cable & System is the only one in Korea.

Kim Hyung-won, Head of Energy and Construction Business Division at LS Cable & System, said, "The completion of the Jeju 3-Link Project is the result of 'Team Korea,' a collaboration among KEPCO, LS Cable & System, LS Marine Solution, and domestic construction companies. It will be an important success case for K-Grid technology to enter the global market."

At the completion ceremony held at the East Jeju Converter Station in Jeju City on the same day, LS Cable & System received a plaque of appreciation for successfully carrying out the project and contributing to the stabilization of the domestic power grid.
