Statement via Facebook on the 6th
Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon declared a 'state of emergency' amid the escalating impeachment crisis of President Yoon Suk-yeol and advocated for a 'responsible prime minister system.'
On the 6th, Mayor Oh stated on Facebook, "Impeachment is not the only solution. For national stability, we must transition to a responsible prime minister system and form an emergency management cabinet." The responsible prime minister system is a system where the prime minister and president share power to provide checks and balances.
This appears to be aimed at People Power Party leader Han Dong-hoon, who effectively expressed support for impeachment during an emergency supreme council meeting that morning. Leader Han said, "I believe it is necessary to promptly suspend President Yoon Suk-yeol's duties to protect the Republic of Korea and its people."
Mayor Oh emphasized, "What the ruling party with responsibility must do now is to alleviate the public's anxiety and manage state affairs." This is seen as a move to check the spread of 'pro-impeachment' opinions within the ruling party centered around Leader Han.
He also urged, "The president should break his irresponsible silence and express his willingness to take full responsibility along with a plan to resolve the situation."
