Yeo Jeong-gwangjae: "President Yoon's Impeachment Is Not the Best Way... Political Instability Must Be Prevented"

"If the public is not persuaded, even the People Power Party cannot stop the impeachment sentiment"

Jeong Gwang-jae, spokesperson for the People Power Party, explained the party's decision to oppose the impeachment motion against President Yoon Seok-yeol by saying, "At this point, impeachment is not the best option to present to the people," and added, "As the ruling party, we have a responsibility to prevent the exhausting conflicts and political instability in our society if the impeachment passes."

On the 6th, Jeong said on CBS Radio's 'Kim Hyun-jung's News Show,' "Yesterday, Representative Han Dong-hoon also said, 'We will try to prevent the impeachment and manage this process,'" and added, "We believe that supporting impeachment is not the best option to present to the people at this time." He continued, "The Democratic Party of Korea is rushing this impeachment as if they have been waiting for it, racing against time," and said, "We cannot agree with proceeding with impeachment in a manner that disregards accurate analysis of the facts, such as 'Let's impeach first and see,' or 'If you don't impeach, you are siding with rebellion.'"

However, he agreed that President Yoon's declaration of martial law on the 3rd was unconstitutional.

Jeong said, "Our party collectively recognizes that President Yoon's emergency martial law measure was unconstitutional and illegal," and added, "Although only 18 members attended the vote on the motion to demand the lifting of martial law, all the members present at the party headquarters also agreed."

Regarding President Yoon not making an official statement about the declaration of martial law, he responded, "The current public opinion is burdensome enough that our party cannot ignore it, but after the impeachment motion is rejected, the presidential office will provide a responsible explanation."

He said, "Whether the impeachment passes or fails, if the president provides an answer that can persuade the people, the impeachment sentiment will calm down to some extent," and added, "If not, the public opinion for impeachment will intensify to a level that the People Power Party cannot stop."
