Israel has reportedly proposed a new ceasefire negotiation plan to the Palestinian armed faction Hamas.
The Jerusalem Post reported on the 5th (local time), citing multiple sources, that the new ceasefire proposal, confirmed recently by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, some ministers, and heads of security agencies, was delivered to Hamas through the mediator Egypt.
The proposal includes a temporary cessation of hostilities between the Israeli military and Hamas for 42 to 60 days, prioritizing the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas, including women, men over 50 years old, and critically ill patients requiring treatment. In return, the Israeli military would release hundreds of Palestinian prisoners held in Israel, including those sentenced to life imprisonment.
An Israeli official stated, "Within a few days, we will be able to confirm whether Hamas is willing to negotiate within the framework we proposed."
Since the 27th of last month, Israel has entered a 60-day ceasefire with Hezbollah, the pro-Iranian armed faction in Lebanon. However, negotiations with Hamas have faced difficulties after a temporary ceasefire reached in November last year fell apart within a week.
However, the intentions of President-elect Donald Trump are expected to be a variable factor. Trump recently warned on his social media platform Truth Social that if Hamas does not release the hostages by January 20th next year, when he takes office, they will face consequences, including the possibility of military suppression.
