On the 5th, the Gwangju Nam-gu Council issued a statement condemning President Yoon Seok-yeol for declaring martial law.

The council members stated, "The foundation of democracy built through the sacrifices and efforts of the people has been severely damaged by the nation's highest leader," and pointed out, "The act of declaring martial law for political reasons while ignoring the requirements and procedures for martial law as stipulated in the Constitution is an absolutely unacceptable illegal and unconstitutional act."

They continued, "It is clear that the prohibition of activities of the National Assembly, local councils, and political parties through Martial Law Command Proclamation No. 1 is an act of violence aimed at destroying the constitutional order and democracy."

They added, "Fortunately, the National Assembly, representing national interests and the safety of the people, promptly lifted the martial law in accordance with constitutional procedures and prevented the nation's unfortunate emergency," and defined, "President Yoon's act of rebellion by abandoning normal state administration is an unforgivable act."

They urged, "For the sake of complete local autonomy, President Yoon should voluntarily resign, and the National Assembly should immediately carry out impeachment procedures."
