The Jeonnam Provincial Office of Education announced on the 5th that the relocation agreement for the (tentatively named) Integrated Mokpo High School within the Okam district of Mokpo has been finally approved at the plenary session of the Jeonnam Provincial Council.
The agreement was unanimously passed by the Education Committee on the 20th of last month and then submitted to the plenary session, where all 46 attending council members voted in favor.

The Office of Education completed key procedures including signing a business agreement with Mokpo City, holding local resident briefings, conducting educational environment assessments, financial investment reviews, and preliminary planning. With this approval from the Provincial Council, the integrated relocation project has gained momentum.
Integrated Mokpo High School is planned to open in March 2028, with a total project cost of 64.4 billion KRW, and will be established with 32 classes. Reflecting the aspirations of the local community, Mokpo City will provide the relocation site of approximately 33,000 square meters free of charge through a lease agreement after approval by the city council.
The integration and relocation of Mokpo High School and Mokpo Girls' High School is the first case nationwide, serving as a pioneering response to the sharp decline in the school-age population, attracting attention from the central government and nationwide.
The Office of Education expects that once this project is completed, commuting inconveniences caused by long-distance assignments will be resolved, and the school will become a glocal future education hub equipped with advanced educational facilities, greatly improving the educational environment in the Okam district of Mokpo.
The existing sites of Mokpo High School and Mokpo Girls' High School will be transformed into a complex educational and cultural facility used jointly by students and local residents, reflecting community opinions. To this end, a research institute for educational policy was commissioned in July to develop detailed plans.
Superintendent Kim Dae-jung emphasized, “We will provide wholehearted support so that Integrated Mokpo High School can rise as a prestigious school representing not only Jeonnam but the entire nation,” and added, “We will also do our best to revitalize the old downtown area and repay the support of local residents.”
