Matching the Rising Elderly Population Ratio with Robust Job Opportunities
Separately Operating the 'Nowon-type Job Project' to Catch Two Birds with One Stone: Clean Urban Environment
Nation's First Nowon Elderly Job Support Center and Seoul's First Nowon Elderly Call Center Highlight Systematic Support
Nowon-gu, Seoul (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced that it has established a comprehensive annual plan to provide jobs for a total of 6,228 senior citizens and is currently recruiting participants.
Since last year, when the population aged 65 and over surpassed 100,000 as of the end of November 2024, the district has been focusing on senior employment policies with the goal of providing jobs to 6,000 seniors.
This is to support the active economic activities and independence of the elderly.
The first recruitment is for government-subsidized projects, including ▲public service-type jobs such as school zones and school meal support ▲capacity-utilization jobs such as support for facilities for the disabled and elderly and public administrative work ▲other community project groups and employment placement-type jobs.
The school project group, which accounts for the largest portion of the public service-type job projects with 1,900 people, was transferred to direct management by the district from 2025 to resolve confusion and complaints caused by different standards among executing agencies.
Seniors wishing to participate can apply through each job executing agency or by visiting the district office. For the school project group involved in volunteer activities such as traffic support in elementary school school zones and meal support, applications can also be made at each neighborhood community center for the convenience of seniors. However, for capacity-utilization projects, in addition to basic documents such as ID cards, other qualification verification documents must be prepared.
Recruitment will continue until the 13th, with final successful candidates announced around January 15, 2025, and the project officially starting on February 3.
Separately, 600 participants for the Nowon-type senior job program will be recruited in January next year and begin activities in February. This is a district-run project providing jobs of two hours per day to seniors aged 60 and over regardless of income. Through this project, the district operates physically healthy seniors as the ‘Clean Keeper Group,’ achieving results such as cleaning neighborhood back alleys and removing illegal advertisements, thereby improving a clean urban environment throughout the district.
The district provides the largest scale of jobs among autonomous districts while maintaining a solid intermediate support organizational system. Established in 2019, the 'Nowon Senior Job Support Center,' the first in the nation to be directly managed by a district, performs various roles including education and training, discovering private sector jobs, and employment placement. This year, the district also directly operates the 'Senior Call Center,' providing one-stop job counseling for seniors. It also offers extensive information on welfare systems, leisure facilities, and other district administration information. Notably, the counselors working here are also seniors from the local community.
Mayor Oh Seung-rok said, “The essence of the crisis in old age is not population aging itself but the threat to dignity of life caused by senior poverty, which ranks first among OECD countries,” and added, “We will create a senior-friendly city with high pride based on jobs that allow seniors to be healthy and active.”
