Launch of Public-Private Joint Council
Total 3-Phase Project Until 2033
Jongno-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Jeong Munheon) will hold the "Gwanghwamun Square Outdoor Advertising Free Display Zone Public-Private Joint Council Launch Ceremony" at 10 a.m. on the 6th in the district office's planning situation room.
The purpose is to strengthen public-private cooperation and systematically promote the project so that the area around Gwanghwamun Square can be reborn as a world-class outdoor advertising landmark like New York's Times Square.
The launch ceremony will be attended by officials from Jongno-gu, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, Seoul City, KT, Kyobo Life Insurance, Koreana Hotel, Donghwa Investment & Development, Sekwang Building, Gukho Building, and Cheil Worldwide.
The public-private joint council is composed of a total of 23 members, including ex officio and appointed members who are experts in law, accounting, and outdoor advertising. As a private-centered autonomous organization, it will secure publicness by recruiting external experts and plans to transparently and rationally manage public contribution funds centered on the secretariat.
Starting with the launch ceremony on this day, the council will work together to coordinate stakeholders within the zone, make rational decisions, and transform Gwanghwamun Square, which holds national symbolic significance, into a single media canvas. Additionally, as the operating entity for the implementation of the basic plan, it will serve as a hub for broadcasting highly artistic content incorporating cutting-edge technology.
Meanwhile, the construction of outdoor advertising within Gwanghwamun Square will be carried out in three phases until 2033, starting with the designation of the outdoor advertising free display zone as of January 1 this year.
The target area includes Gwanghwamun Square and Uijeongbu, the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History, the U.S. Embassy, and nine nearby buildings, as well as the right side of Sejong-daero. It is expected that the installation of advertisements will be highly effective as it is a space with a large floating population, the most symbolic area representing Korea, a popular destination for domestic and international tourists, and adjacent to cultural heritage sites.
Until 2026, the introductory phase of the first stage, the foundation of the Gwanghwamun Square project will be laid by adding future technology to traditional culture.
Starting with Koreana Hotel in March next year, electronic billboards will be installed sequentially at Dong-A Ilbo, Gukho Building, Sekwang Building, KT, and Donghwa Duty Free Shop by the end of the year. Plans also include broadcasting media works by young artists, collaborative events with the council, and related festivals.
District Mayor Jeong Munheon stated, "With the designation of the free display zone as of January 1 this year and the launch of the council, the Gwanghwamun Square project has gained momentum," adding, "We will work hard to successfully promote the Gwanghwamun Square project in cooperation with the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, Seoul City, and related organizations."
