Autonomous buses will operate in Dongbaek District, Giheung-gu, Yongin-si, Gyeonggi-do. Yongin City announced on the 5th that Dongbaek District has been designated as a pilot zone for autonomous vehicles by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

The 'Autonomous Vehicle Pilot Zone' is an area where regulatory exemptions are applied to promote research and pilot operation of autonomous vehicles. Once designated as a zone, it is subject to the Passenger Transport for Profit, Vehicle Safety Standards, and Freight Transport exemptions under the Autonomous Vehicle Act.

The area designated as the pilot zone by the city is the entire Dongbaek 2-dong. It includes a 3.0 km circular route connecting Dongbaek Station, Dongbaek E-Mart, Dongbaek Library, and back to Dongbaek Station, as well as a 0.6 km section between the main and rear gates of Yongin Severance Hospital.

The city plans to first introduce a route-type autonomous bus connecting Dongbaek Station as a transportation hub with Yongin Severance Hospital, Dongbaek E-Mart, and Dongbaek Library as a pilot project. Subsequently, there are plans to expand the operation route to cover the entire Dongbaek-dong in phases. To improve accessibility to Yongin Severance Hospital, a regional medical facility, the city will also explore ways to introduce autonomous buses in cooperation with the hospital.

Earlier, in September last year, the city signed an agreement to form a 'Mobility Consortium' with 18 institutions and companies to promote advanced mobility pilot projects. The consortium includes four public institutions such as Yongin City and the Yongin Eastern and Western Police Stations, two academic institutions including Myongji University Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation and the Next Generation Convergence Technology Institute, and 12 private companies such as SK Telecom, Autocrypt, Studio Galileo, and AR247.

Together with these institutions, the city will promote pilot projects in various fields such as autonomous driving, demand-responsive transport (DRT), personal mobility (PM) stations, and robot delivery to solve local transportation problems using advanced technology.

A city official said, "We will strive to establish an operating environment tailored to local characteristics so that autonomous driving technology can be conveniently used by citizens and expand it as a public service."
