Presidents of faculty associations from national and public universities across the country condemned President Yoon Suk-yeol's declaration of martial law and called for his impeachment.
The National Federation of Faculty Associations of National and Public Universities (Gukgyoryeon) issued a statement on the 4th, criticizing, "President Yoon's declaration of martial law is an unconstitutional and illegal act that lacks the requirements and procedures stipulated by the Constitution and laws."
They added, "The illegal martial law has plunged democratic Korea into extreme chaos and anxiety," and "It has seriously damaged the pride of the sovereign people and the national dignity." They further stated, "We demand impeachment of President Yoon and thorough investigation and punishment of those involved."
Gukgyoryeon emphasized, "No matter what crisis we face, as professors, we will fulfill our responsibilities and duties, and as bastions of scholarship and partners in national development, we will stand resolutely with the people until this situation is resolved."
They also added, "We recognize that acts against democratic values can undermine not only individual freedoms but also social trust and the foundation of the nation's existence. We will educate students to uphold constitutional values and to be citizens who think and act justly."
Gukgyoryeon is an organization composed of presidents of faculty associations from a total of 40 national universities, national university corporations, and public universities.
