"Protecting the Constitutional Order of Liberal Democracy"
Han Dong-hoon, leader of the People Power Party, stated, "The constitutional order of freedom and democracy in the Republic of Korea will be upheld," and added, "We will correct the wrongful declaration of martial law."
On the 4th, Han said on CBS Radio's 'Kim Hyun-jung's News Show,' "While the impeachment attempt was clearly excessive, it cannot be a reason for such an unconstitutional and illegal declaration of martial law." This broadcast was a recorded segment conducted immediately after President Yoon Seok-yeol's declaration of emergency martial law.
Han pointed out that there was no communication with the presidential office regarding the martial law and described it as an "unconstitutional and illegal declaration of martial law that disregards the order of liberal democracy and the constitutional order." He added, "The People Power Party shares the view that we must take the lead in restoring the constitutional order."
The situation in the National Assembly unfolded rapidly during the six hours from President Yoon's declaration of emergency martial law to its lifting.
There was friction as martial law troops entered the National Assembly grounds, and there were reports that the role of the deployed troops was to arrest Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, Han Dong-hoon, leader of the People Power Party, and Woo Won-shik, Speaker of the National Assembly. Regarding the situation at the scene at that time, Han said, "It is said that soldiers were entering inside," and added, "It seems they were trying to block the resolution demanding the lifting of martial law under the pretext of banning political party activities in the National Assembly."
Furthermore, Han expressed, "As a politician, I feel deeply sorry," but added, "However, we will uphold the constitutional order of freedom and democracy in the Republic of Korea. The people should not worry too much."
