Han Dong-hoon, leader of the People Power Party, expressed opposition to President Yoon Seok-yeol's declaration of martial law on the 3rd, stating, "We will stop it together with the people."
On the night of the same day, immediately after President Yoon's declaration of martial law, Han issued a statement to the media saying, "The president's declaration of martial law is wrong."
Earlier, President Yoon announced in an emergency address at the Yongsan Presidential Office, "I declare martial law to protect the free Republic of Korea from the threat of North Korean communist forces, to eradicate the shameless pro-North anti-state forces who plunder the freedom and happiness of our people at once, and to uphold the free constitutional order."
According to Article 77 of the Constitution, the president may declare martial law by law when it is necessary to respond to military needs or maintain public peace and order with troops in times of war, armed conflict, or equivalent national emergencies.
The Ministry of National Defense held a meeting of key commanders of all military forces and issued orders to strengthen emergency vigilance and readiness across all forces.
