Claims of Prosecutorial Selective Indictment Like President-Elect Trump
"Using Trump DOJ, Cannot Resist"
Criticism Continues from Democratic Party as "Bad Precedent"
On the 1st (local time), President Biden's sudden pardon of his second son Hunter has been criticized as an act that undermines the fairness of the judicial system. Previously, President Biden had stated several times that he would not exercise his pardon power.
The New York Times, a major U.S. media outlet, analyzed that Biden's pardon would make it even more difficult for the Democratic Party to resist efforts by President-elect Trump to use the Department of Justice for political purposes.
President Biden signed the pardon, claiming that the prosecution against Hunter was selectively carried out for political purposes. He stated, "Despite relentless attacks and selective prosecutions, Hunter has remained sound of mind for five and a half years (without being under the influence of anything). There have been attempts to bring him down," adding, "They tried to bring Hunter down, and in doing so, they tried to bring me down. There is no reason to believe this will stop here. Enough is enough."
President Biden's remarks have sparked controversy as they align with the context of President-elect Trump's claims. Trump has long argued that "the Biden administration's judicial system has been weaponized," portraying himself as a "victim of selective prosecution." Notably, Trump recently appointed 'loyalist' Kashy Patel, who vowed to punish Trump's political opponents, as the next director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
As a result, criticism continues both inside and outside the Democratic Party. Jared Polis, governor of Colorado and a Democrat, said on X (formerly Twitter), "As a father, I understand President Biden," but added, "I am disappointed that he prioritized family over the country." He further stated, "This sets a bad precedent that future presidents could abuse, and sadly, it will tarnish his reputation."
Former Republican Congressman Joe Walsh, who supported President Biden in the presidential election, also criticized the move, saying it "only fuels political cynicism."
