Korea Expressway Corporation Employee Who Tried to Stop Violence Sent to Trial for Assault Charges
A man in his 40s who suddenly stopped his car on the highway and threw stones at the vehicles behind him was sentenced to probation.
On the 2nd, the Cheongju District Court Criminal Division 4 sentenced Mr. A, who was tried on charges of injury, assault on a driver under the Act on Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes, and special property damage, to one year in prison with two years of probation. He was also ordered to undergo two years of probation supervision.
On January 2nd at around 10:05 a.m., Mr. A suddenly stopped his 1-ton Porter truck on the second lane of the two-lane one-way road near the Ochang Rest Area on the Jungbu Expressway heading toward Hanam in Cheongwon-gu, Cheongju City, then got out and obstructed the traffic of the vehicles behind him without any reason. Mr. A was prosecuted for assaulting an employee of the Korea Expressway Corporation who tried to stop him. The employee suffered injuries requiring two weeks of medical treatment due to Mr. A’s assault.
In particular, he threw stones at other vehicles, climbed onto a stopped passenger car, and even attempted to cross over the central divider.
Mr. A was arrested on the spot by the police who responded to the report and was admitted to a psychiatric hospital for emergency treatment.
Judge Kang stated, "Stopping a car on the highway to obstruct traffic and assaulting other drivers is a serious offense. However, considering that the mental illness he has been suffering from appears to have influenced the crime, and that he has pledged not to reoffend through treatment, the sentence was determined accordingly."
