Professor Jeong Jin-ho of Seoul National University Appointed as Next President of the Korean Academy of Science and Technology

36 New Full Members Also Elected

Professor Jeong Jin-ho, Professor Emeritus at Seoul National University, has been elected as the next president of the Korean Academy of Science and Technology. The Academy also elected 36 new regular members.

The Academy held the "2024 2nd Regular General Meeting" at the Academy Hall on the 29th of last month and approved Professor Jeong Jin-ho as the 11th president.


Professor Jeong was elected through a vote conducted from September to October among 486 regular members of the Academy, and after approval by the Minister of Science and ICT, he will serve a three-year term starting March 1, 2025.


Professor Jeong is a world-renowned authority in the field of toxicology. He served as a professor at the College of Pharmacy, Seoul National University for 34 years since 1988, researching the human toxicity of chemicals found in drugs, food, and the atmosphere, as well as the human safety of hazardous chemicals.


President-elect Jeong Jin-ho stated, “I will fulfill the Academy’s fundamental missions such as proposing future strategies for the development of science and technology in Korea, securing international leadership, and fulfilling social responsibilities.” He added, “In particular, based on in-depth analysis of stakeholders including the scientific community, government ministries, and the National Assembly, I will actively respond to core science and technology policies and promote activities that realize social values based on the expertise of science and technology scholars.”


The Ministry of Science and ICT previously requested severe disciplinary action against the current president Yoo Wook-jun and Executive Vice President Lee Chang-hee of the Academy due to workplace harassment and moral laxity.


The Academy also elected new regular members. The new members are: ▲Policy Division Shin Dong-won (Jeonbuk National University) ▲Science Division Kim Myung-hee (KRIBB), Park Seung-beom (Seoul National University), Yang Beom-jeong (Seoul National University), Lee Kyung-jin (KAIST), Lee Yong-nam (KAIST), Choi Gil-ju (KAIST), Choi Tae-rim (ETH Zurich) ▲Engineering Division Kim Beom-jun (KAIST), Kim Sang-woo (Yonsei University), Kim Soo-min (Yonsei University), Kim Ho-young (Seoul National University), Noh Yong-young (POSTECH), Park Jong-woo (Seoul National University), Shin Byung-ha (KAIST), Shim Byung-hyo (Seoul National University), Oh Il-kwon (KAIST), Cho Sung-bae (Yonsei University), Choi Hong-soo (DGIST), Han Se-gwang (POSTECH) ▲Agriculture and Fisheries Division Ryu Jae-woong (Kyungpook National University), Ryu Chung-min (Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology), Baek Nam-cheon (Seoul National University), Yoo Sang-ho (Sejong University), Lee Min-seok (Korea University), Lee Je-hee (Jeju National University), Lee Hae-jung (Gachon University), Jeon Byung-soo (Pukyong National University) ▲Medical and Pharmaceutical Division Kim Dong-gi (Seoul National University), Kim Sang-hee (Seoul National University), Kim Seung-hyun (Hanyang University), Kim In-soo (Sungkyunkwan University), Sung Kyung-rim (Ulsan University), Song Jin-won (Korea University), Lee Jung-ho (KAIST), Choi Ui-geun (Seoul National University), totaling 36 members.
