Elderly with Mild Dementia or Mild Cognitive Impairment Participate as Baristas
Operated in Fixed and Mobile Formats
Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yu Seong-hoon) announced that it is operating the ‘Memory Cafe,’ where elderly individuals diagnosed with mild dementia or mild cognitive impairment work as cafe staff.
The Memory Cafe was established to provide social activity opportunities for elderly people with dementia and to inform residents that even with dementia, they can live together in the local community.
It is operated for residents participating in dementia screening, counseling services, or cognitive programs at the Geumcheon Dementia Safety Center. It is a cafe where customers and staff show mutual consideration and understanding even if the ordered menu items are different.
The cafe staff are elderly individuals aged 60 or older who have mild dementia or mild cognitive impairment and wish to engage in coffee-making activities. They take orders, prepare beverages, and regularly check and organize supplies.
At the Memory Cafe, various drinks such as coffee, omija tea, grapefruit tea, kombucha, as well as fruit juices like orange juice and maesil (green plum) juice are sold. Residents using the Geumcheon Dementia Safety Center receive coupons to enjoy beverages free of charge.
The Memory Cafe operates in both fixed and mobile formats. The fixed cafe operates on the 6th floor of the Geumcheon Dementia Safety Center from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Tuesdays and from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursdays, while the mobile cafe operates using a truck during events.
The mobile Memory Cafe also visited the ‘Finding Happy Memories’ dementia awareness event held at Geumcheon-gu Office Plaza on October 30, providing beverages to program participants.
Yu Seong-hoon, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, said, “Through the Memory Cafe, we hope that elderly people with dementia gain confidence in social activities and that residents become more considerate,” adding, “We will continue to support a dementia-friendly Geumcheon-gu.”
