A Military Couple Living as Weekend Spouses for 10 Years
"Our Marriage Is Already Over" Demands Divorce
Due to the nature of their jobs, a military couple who had lived as a weekend couple for 10 years suddenly faced a divorce crisis.
On the 29th, YTN Radio's 'Attorney Jo Inseop's Counseling Center' shared the story of husband A, who recently received a mutual divorce application from his wife. A said, "My wife and I are career military officers," and added, "We met at an officers' gathering. At the time, I was a senior captain about to be promoted to major, and my wife was a newly promoted junior lieutenant." He continued, "During our marriage, I became a major and my wife became a captain," and explained, "Due to the nature of military service requiring relocation, we have hardly lived together in the same area."
A further explained, "When our children were young, my wife took care of them at the military housing, and I worked at a different location during weekdays, visiting my wife and children on weekends," adding, "For the past two years, I have been taking care of the children at the housing where I stay, and my wife came on weekends." However, A revealed, "At some point, my wife stopped coming home and suddenly brought a mutual divorce application," and confessed, "Because of the nature of our jobs, we have lived apart for about 10 years, but my wife said that meant our marriage was already over."
Additionally, A asked for advice, saying, "My wife said that her weekend visits to see the children were just 'visitation rights' and even mentioned divorce litigation. How can I get the divorce dismissed?"
Attorney Jo Inseop, who read this story, said, "It seems they have lived as a weekend couple for a long time due to their jobs, and the wife appears to claim this separation as 'living apart' to file for divorce," but added, "However, simply living apart during weekdays may not be considered 'living apart' that causes the breakdown of the marriage."
Attorney Jo advised, "They should gather strong evidence proving that they have lived as a weekend couple, maintaining an economic and living community," and said, "They need to persuade the wife and continue efforts to restore the relationship. Showing that the marriage has a chance of recovery will help the judge rule to dismiss the divorce."
