Impeachment Move Against Philippine Vice President Over 'President Assassination' Remark... Marcos Opposes Yonhap News

According to reports, President Marcos told reporters the day before, regarding the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte, "Why waste time on that?" and added, "It does not help improve the lives of the people at all." He continued, "From a broader perspective, Vice President Sara is not important," emphasizing, "Please do not proceed with the impeachment."

Earlier, President Marcos and Vice President Duterte formed a political alliance between two major families after winning the 2022 presidential election as running mates, but soon began to have conflicts again. In particular, Vice President Duterte claimed at a press conference on the 23rd that there was an assassination plan targeting her, and said she instructed her security guards to kill President Marcos and his family if she were assassinated.

The Philippine Presidential Palace regarded this as a serious threat to the president and declared it a national security issue, prompting authorities to launch an investigation. The Philippine National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) issued a summons on the 29th for her to appear, but Vice President Duterte did not comply.

Amid these ongoing circumstances, the Philippine opposition progressive party coalition Makabayan and others have recently been pushing for the impeachment of Vice President Duterte. Makabayan criticized President Marcos's opposition as a "brazen attempt to exert influence over the Congress," stating, "Vice President Duterte must be held accountable."

However, the ruling party in the Philippines holds the position that uncovering the truth regarding Vice President Duterte's alleged budget misuse should take precedence over impeachment, and the House of Representatives has also begun an investigation into the vice president's misuse of confidential funds.
