On the 29th, Gwangju City announced on the 30th that it conducted a '2024 Winter Heavy Snow Response Joint Training' with the police, fire department, autonomous districts, the 2nd Ring Road, and the Autonomous Disaster Prevention Corps on the unopened road from Mujin-ro to Woljeon-dong in Gwangsan-gu.

The city held the joint training to establish an organic cooperation system with related agencies, considering the recent sudden heavy snowfall caused by climate change and the regional characteristic of relatively heavy snowfall due to the geographical influence of the West Coast.

In particular, since December 2022 when 40 cm of snow accumulated in Gwangju, marking the second highest snowfall since weather observations began, and as abnormal weather events become more frequent, the city is fully prepared with snow removal equipment and personnel.

This training assumed a situation where, due to a rear-end collision accident on a snowy road at Eodeungdaegyo Bridge, the unopened road between Mujin-ro and Woljeon-dong is used as a temporary detour. The goal was to respond to traffic congestion and ensure smooth vehicle flow through prompt snow removal. Additionally, snow removal measures using small equipment such as brushes, blowers, and personal spreaders were also inspected for efficient snow removal on side roads.

Deputy Mayor Ko Gwang-wan stated, “Snow removal personnel from the city, autonomous districts, and ring roads should inspect winter snow removal equipment and materials and always pay attention to weather conditions to prepare for sudden heavy snowfall,” adding, “Please also thoroughly prepare for accident-causing factors such as black ice (road ice).”
