Next Month on the 4th... 14th Excavation Survey Uncovers and Reveals Wooden Tablets
Gyeonggi Yangju City (Mayor Kang Su-hyun) announced on the 29th that it will hold the "14th Excavation Site Open House of Yangju Daemosanseong" on December 4th in collaboration with the Giho Cultural Heritage Research Foundation (Director Ko Jae-yong).
This open house will showcase the 14th excavation site of Yangju Daemosanseong and the main unearthed artifacts to the general public and academic officials.
In particular, four newly unearthed wooden tablets presumed to be from the Taebong period will be revealed for the first time, and visitors will also be able to view key artifacts such as the wooden tablets, the water collection facility where the tablets were found, and excavation sites like the North Gate remains.
Meanwhile, the four wooden tablets unearthed in this excavation are believed to be related to last year's domestic first discovery of Taebong period wooden tablets known as the "Taebong State Wooden Tablets."
The "Taebong State Wooden Tablets" discovered last year consist of 123 characters on an octagonal multi-faced tablet, with the era name Jeonggae 3rd year (政開三年) of Taebong inscribed in ink, confirming its production in 916 AD.
Among domestic wooden tablet finds, it showed the most faces (8), the most lines (8), and the highest number of characters (123), bringing a fresh perspective to the study of ancient Korean history.
The newly unearthed wooden tablets are evaluated as valuable physical materials that reveal the social aspects of the Taebong period, and they are expected to be an important case in the study of weights and measures from the Three Kingdoms to the Goryeo period, as they are the first domestic wooden tablets to display grain quantity indicators such as du (斗), doe (刀), hop (合), and pun (分).
A Yangju City official stated, "Since 2018, our city has been conducting annual excavations of Yangju Daemosanseong to clarify its historical significance, and we plan to continue our efforts to advance as the 'Historical and Cultural Center of Northern Gyeonggi, Yangju.'"
