The Korean Society for Space Security (President Lee Jae-woo) announced on the 29th that it held the 2024 Fall Academic Conference and General Assembly under the theme of "Space Security Policy, Technology, and Cooperation."
At this academic conference, the society provided perspectives on "Space from the viewpoint of security" through presentations on 12 strategic tasks, and explored ways of "Security from the viewpoint of space" through topics such as space security policy, space cybersecurity, space transportation and satellite capabilities, space environment, and space surveillance.
The society and Yonsei University Aerospace Strategy Institute signed an MOU at this academic conference to cooperate in space security research and development, and agreed to expand joint research and personnel exchanges.
President Lee Jae-woo stated, "Space is no longer a distant place but has become a living space near us and a part of our lives," adding, "As seen in the Ukraine war, space has become an important area for military security, so the time has come for 'Space from the viewpoint of security' and 'Security from the viewpoint of space.'"
Yoon Oh-jun, 3rd Deputy Director of the National Intelligence Service, emphasized in his welcoming remarks that "In a situation where the competition among nations over outer space is intensifying, it is essential to consolidate national capabilities and global cooperation to protect space security," and stated, "We will actively support research on national space security-related laws, policies, and core technologies for responding to space threats, and strengthen communication with the private sector through the society."
Kim Yong-ho, Vice President of Yonsei University, emphasized in his congratulatory speech that long-term national policies, massive budget investments, and advanced technology development are necessary for space security, and above all, the cultivation and utilization of excellent talent are important. He said, "Yonsei University will expand research and cooperation in the field of space security through on-campus research institutes and departments related to space, such as the Aerospace Strategy Institute, the Natural Science Research Institute, and the Space Science Research Institute."
