An Ecotourism Area is a region with environmental conservation value where the importance of ecosystem protection can be experienced and educated. Once selected, the area receives financial support for operation and management, as well as consultation and promotional assistance. The Ecotourism Area program, which began in 2013 to wisely utilize and promote excellent natural environments, has added five new sites this year, bringing the total to 40.
Goyang City's Janghang Wetland is a Ramsar wetland internationally recognized for its ecological excellence. It is an estuarine area where seawater and river water meet, and features a unique symbiotic relationship between willows and mudflat crabs. Notably, it is an ecological treasure trove hosting over 30,000 waterbirds annually, including the endangered species Class II Hooded Crane.
The ‘Ramsar Goyang Janghang Wetland Ecology Center,’ a hub facility for ecological education and ecotourism, has been operating on a trial basis since October this year. The center was remodeled from a barracks previously used by soldiers.
The main facility of the ecology center, the Media Art Hall, displays the four seasons of Janghang Wetland across all surrounding walls. Visitors can enjoy guided explanations from interpreters or participate in various hands-on activities. Reservations can be made through the Janghang Wetland website for those wishing to visit.
Goyang Special City plans to make efforts for the sustainable and wise use of the wetland by operating the Han River Estuary and Janghang Wetland ecotourism programs centered around the ecology center, leveraging the outstanding ecological value of Janghang Wetland.
