The 'Natural Environment Awards,' organized by the Korea Ecological Restoration Association, is a contest that evaluates achievements aimed at carbon neutrality and ecosystem service enhancement among local governments, institutions, and organizations nationwide. It recognizes institutions that have demonstrated outstanding results in natural environment conservation and restoration projects.

The awarded 'Namyang Fine Dust Blocking Urban Forest' is an urban forest established last year by the city on state-owned land at San 40-2, Sinnam-ri, Namyang-eup, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and block fine dust. Originally, this area was a site left abandoned after large-scale earth and stone extraction in the past.

The urban forest covers approximately 110,000㎡, where tens of thousands of trees have been planted, and ecological retention ponds and dumbeong (natural ponds) have been created to absorb and adsorb air pollutants. It also effectively restores the abandoned quarry. In particular, by preserving and restoring ecological wetlands and forests connected to the urban forest, it has created diverse habitats, enhancing the stability of the local ecosystem and providing ecological experience spaces for local residents.

Jung Myung-geun, Mayor of Hwaseong City, stated, "The award for the Namyang Fine Dust Blocking Urban Forest is the result of the city's efforts to reduce air pollution and conserve the local ecosystem." He added, "We will continue to take the lead in ecological restoration, biodiversity enhancement, and improving environmental welfare for citizens."
