Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, will hold an international academic symposium to convey information about resource recovery facilities and change public perception.

Gwangsan-gu announced on the 29th that it will host the "Understanding Resource Recovery Facilities" international symposium on the afternoon of December 6th at the Honam University Culture and Sports Center.

This event was organized to face the waste disposal issues confronting Gwangju and seek solutions. With the amendment of the Waste Management Act, the direct landfill of household waste will be banned starting in 2030, but Gwangju is the only metropolitan local government without a resource recovery facility.

On the day, Professor Bae Jae-geun from the Department of Energy and Environmental Engineering at Seoul National University of Science and Technology, recognized as an authority in waste disposal and resource recovery, will deliver a keynote speech titled "Waste Disposal Issues and Trends in Installation and Operation of Resource Circulation Facilities." Following this, in a panel discussion, domestic and international experts and citizen representatives will share diverse perspectives on the installation and operation of resource recovery facilities.

Panelists include Park Byung-gyu, Mayor of Gwangsan-gu; Song Chang-su, Dean of the AI (Artificial Intelligence) College at Honam University; Jesper Knudsen, Energy Counselor at the Embassy of Denmark in Korea; Nils Thor Rosted, General Manager of the Amager Bakke resource recovery facility in Copenhagen, Denmark; Namai Shuichi (生井 秀一), Head of Appropriate Processing Division at the Yokohama Resource Circulation Bureau in Japan; and Julian Quintart, EU Climate Action Goodwill Ambassador.

Belgian broadcaster Julian Quintart will also hold a talk concert titled "Stories of Climate Action" before the symposium begins.

Mayor Park said, "The waste problem facing Gwangju is an urgent issue that can no longer be postponed and is a social responsibility that all citizens must solve together. I hope this international academic symposium will be a starting point for the local community to collectively consider and prepare for sustainable urban development, which realizes not only waste disposal but also energy regeneration and environmental protection as core infrastructure."
