Fled to Thailand After Crime
Law Firm Demands 30 Bitcoins
A man in his 30s who threatened a major domestic law firm by saying he would distribute hacked internal information and demanded virtual currency (Bitcoin) worth tens of billions of won was arrested by the police.
On the 29th, the Seoul Seocho Police Station announced that they forcibly repatriated Lee Mo (33), who was on the run in Thailand, to Korea the day before and urgently arrested him at Incheon International Airport on charges of attempted extortion. Lee was under an Interpol red notice.
Lee is accused of threatening Company A, a top 10 domestic law firm, last August by saying, "I hacked and extracted 1.4TB (terabytes) worth of company data, so give me 30 Bitcoins (approximately 3.9 billion KRW)." Company A's own investigation found no evidence of hacking damage.
Lee reportedly claimed that he received the data through a hacker named 'Trustman0.'
The police plan to verify the connection between the hacker group and Lee.
