Incheon Airport Completes Phase 4 Expansion... "Mega Hub for 100 Million Annual Passengers"

Becoming the World's 3rd Largest Mega Hub Airport
Cargo Handling Capacity Ranks 2nd Globally... Semiconductor Logistics Hub

Incheon International Airport is set to become a mega hub airport capable of accommodating 100 million passengers annually.

On the morning of the 29th, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and Incheon International Airport Corporation held the 'Incheon Airport Phase 4 Grand Opening' event at the expansion area of Terminal 2. The Phase 4 expansion project, which began in 2017 with an investment of approximately 4.8 trillion KRW, has now been completed.

With this expansion opening, Incheon International Airport has become the world's third-largest airport, capable of handling 106 million international passengers annually. Additionally, it now has two passenger terminals, each capable of accommodating over 50 million international passengers, a world first.

Cargo handling capacity has also increased from 5 million tons to 6.3 million tons, elevating it to the world’s second-largest level. This solidifies its position as a semiconductor logistics hub, handling 98% of the country’s semiconductor exports.

Furthermore, by establishing a new aviation industry ecosystem with facilities such as Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO), cargo terminals, and tourism and cultural convergence facilities, it is expected to generate an economic ripple effect of 1.7 trillion KRW.

From the user’s perspective, convenience has been enhanced. The introduction of the 'Smart Pass' system, which utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) and biometric recognition, allows for simple identity verification without repeatedly presenting passports and boarding passes. An automated security screening system has also been installed to improve security safety, efficiency, and speed. Cultural aspects have been strengthened by decorating various terminal areas with art sculptures representing Korean culture and creating outdoor garden spaces within the airport.

Park Sang-woo, Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, said, "This Phase 4 expansion project is a prime example of a government policy successfully carried out without wavering over a 30-year long-term plan. It will serve as a milestone opening the era of 100 million passengers and a new takeoff for the Republic of Korea."

Lee Hak-jae, President of Incheon International Airport Corporation, stated, "We will secure a competitive edge over overseas rival airports and strengthen the status of our country’s aviation industry."
