The government will actively promote the construction project of the advanced semiconductor testbed called 'Trinity Fab,' linked with semiconductor chip manufacturing companies, starting next year to enhance the technological competitiveness of domestic semiconductor materials, parts, and equipment (SoBuJang) companies.
On the 28th, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced at the National R&D Project Evaluation Committee that the 'Advanced Semiconductor Mass Production-Linked Mini Fab Infrastructure Construction Project' has passed the preliminary feasibility study.
The mini fab will be established within the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster with an investment of about 1 trillion KRW from the government, SK Hynix, and local governments (Gyeonggi Province, Yongin City), and will be used as an advanced semiconductor testbed for SoBuJang companies.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy explained, "The mini fab will be named 'Trinity Fab' to signify the trinity formed by the government, chip manufacturers, and SoBuJang companies working together for mutual growth and innovation to enhance domestic semiconductor competitiveness."
Trinity Fab will be built in an environment identical to semiconductor mass production fabs and plans to install about 40 process and measurement equipment essential for advanced semiconductor processes.
Through this, performance and verification evaluation of semiconductor SoBuJang development products linked with demand companies and continuous consulting by professional engineers connected with SK Hynix will be supported. Additionally, space rental will be promoted for equipment companies that find it difficult to verify and evaluate developed equipment, as well as companies that have difficulty building and managing their own cleanrooms.
The government plans to support shortening the new product development period of domestic SoBuJang companies through the construction of the testbed. Furthermore, based on the established infrastructure, technology development linked with demand companies and the cultivation of field-oriented semiconductor experts in industry-academia-research cooperation will also be promoted.
Moreover, by linking with existing public fabs, multifaceted support will be pursued to enable everything from characteristic evaluation of semiconductor SoBuJang products to performance evaluation for mass production entry. Through this, it is expected to contribute to securing the technological competitiveness of semiconductor SoBuJang companies, promoting their entry into the global market, and strengthening the stability of the domestic semiconductor supply chain.
The government stated that it will take the Trinity Fab, a model of mutual growth and innovation linking global semiconductor demand companies with small and medium-sized enterprises, as a flagship and plans to expand it to all industrial sectors in the future.
