Jeonnam Provincial Council Budget Committee Urges Resolution of Conflict Over Free Meal Budget

Jeonnam Province and Provincial Office of Education Recommend Agreement by the 2nd of Next Month

The Jeonnam Provincial Council's Special Committee on Budget and Accounts urged on the 28th that Jeonnam Province and the Jeonnam Office of Education swiftly find a solution regarding the budget sharing issue for free school meals, with both institutions adopting a cooperative attitude.

Jeonnam Province emphasized that since it first introduced free school meals nationwide in 2011, expanded the program to all elementary and middle schools in 2013, and set standards for educational welfare, free school meals are an essential promise for the future of children.

However, the Budget and Accounts Committee expressed concern over the recent negative situation where Jeonnam Province and the Office of Education are in conflict over the budget sharing for free school meals.

The committee strongly stated that the free school meal budget is not merely a cost issue but an important investment in future generations, and that both institutions must reach an agreement through responsible administration.

Chairman Na Gwang-guk said, “We strongly request that the province and the Office of Education demonstrate coexistence and cooperative governance in front of residents, parents, and students,” adding, “We hope that with a spirit of empathy, both institutions will make mutual concessions step by step and make a magnanimous decision for the future of the children.”

The Budget and Accounts Committee demanded that both institutions submit an agreed budget plan by the 2nd of next month. It also clearly stated that if the budget agreement is not reached, budget deliberations may be delayed.
