Flight Cancellations of 150 Aircraft Due to Heavy Snow... "Snow and Rain Expected to Continue Until the Night of the 27th" Yonhap News

On the 27th, as a heavy snow warning was issued mainly for the Seoul metropolitan area and Gangwon region, 150 flights and 89 passenger ships were canceled.

According to the heavy snow response situation report from the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters (CDSCH) as of 6 p.m. that day, 150 flights were canceled, including 71 at Incheon Airport, 34 at Gimpo Airport, and 29 at Jeju Airport.

Additionally, 89 passenger ships suspended operations on 70 routes, including Incheon?Baengnyeong and Pohang?Ulleung.

Four road sections in Jeonbuk and one in Jeonnam were closed.

Access to 325 entrances of 13 national parks, including Bukhansan and Seoraksan, was also restricted.

There were 32 temporary power outages in the Seoul metropolitan area and Gangwon Province.

The Fire Agency conducted a total of 698 fire-related activities, including rescue and emergency medical services, related to this heavy snow.

So far, no casualties have been reported. However, one person died when the roof of a tent-type garage collapsed during snow removal work in Yangpyeong-gun, Gyeonggi Province, and the exact cause is under investigation.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, heavy snow warnings are currently in effect mainly for the Seoul metropolitan area, Gangwon, Chungbuk, and eastern Jeonbuk, with snowfall of 1 to 5 cm per hour.

Snow or rain is expected to continue until the morning of the 28th in the central and southern inland areas of Gangwon and Gyeongbuk, and until the night of the 27th in southern Gyeonggi, Chungnam, Jeolla, and Jeju.

Earlier, the CDSCH raised its response level to Stage 2 at 2 p.m. on the 27th and upgraded the heavy snow crisis alert from 'caution' to 'warning.'

The CDSCH urged thorough prevention of damage such as traffic congestion during commuting hours, multi-vehicle collisions on icy roads, and pedestrian safety accidents due to the rain and snow.

They emphasized thorough snow removal work on vulnerable sections such as bridges, tunnel entrances, and slopes to prevent the accumulated rain and snow from freezing, and advised preemptive control and detours if passage becomes difficult.

Promotion of roof snow removal was strengthened for snow-vulnerable structures such as vinyl greenhouses, livestock sheds, and old buildings, and immediate pre-evacuation was emphasized if there is a risk of collapse.
