Ranked 3rd in Environmental Sector... Recognized for Leading Actions in Climate Crisis Response
Strengthening Global Cooperation through Friendship Exchange with Grenoble, France

Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Ilhyung Lee) received the Encouragement Award for Excellence in the Environment category at the 14th Local Government Productivity Awards.

The Local Government Productivity Awards are hosted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and the Korea Productivity Center, evaluating and selecting outstanding cases of productivity and sector-specific excellence among local governments nationwide.

A total of 139 local governments submitted 359 cases across four sectors: economy, environment, culture, and welfare. Dongdaemun-gu ranked third in the environment category and received the Encouragement Award.

This award follows Dongdaemun-gu’s receipt of the Grand Prize in the Environment category (Prime Minister’s Commendation) at the 20th Korea Local Autonomy Management Competition held last September, further recognizing the district’s environmental policies and achievements.

Since Mayor Ilhyung Lee took office in the 8th elected term, Dongdaemun-gu has taken a leading role in responding to the climate crisis. In February last year, it became the first autonomous district in Seoul to declare itself a ‘2050 Carbon Neutral City’ and has been promoting strategic projects in five key sectors: response infrastructure, buildings, waste, road transportation, and carbon sinks, striving to create a pleasant living environment for residents and protect the environmental rights of future generations.

Additionally, to expand its international environmental network, Dongdaemun-gu joined the international environmental organization CityNet in November last year and signed a friendship and exchange agreement with Grenoble Alpes M?tropole in France on the 14th of this month, strengthening the foundation for global cooperation. Through this, the two cities plan to spread eco-friendly urban models worldwide.

Mayor Ilhyung Lee stated, “This award recognizes Dongdaemun-gu’s leading role in climate crisis response policies. We will continue to do our best to make Dongdaemun-gu a carbon-neutral city by actively adopting advanced overseas cases.”
