Recently, as celebrities' experiences with frozen sperm and eggs have frequently appeared on broadcasts, interest in this topic has been increasing.
Jeon Hyun-moo recently appeared on the Channel S variety show 'Jeon Hyun-moo Project' and caught attention when he responded to actor Ryu Seung-soo, who recommended 'sperm freezing,' by saying, "Sounds good. Let's go freeze it tomorrow morning." Then, when Ryu Seung-soo mentioned, "The government also provides support," Jeon Hyun-moo joked, "Shall we get the subsidy and go freeze it?" which drew laughter.
Sperm freezing is relatively simpler and less expensive compared to egg freezing, which requires invasive procedures after increasing ovulation with medication. When the storage period is set to three years, eggs cost around 3 to 4 million won, while sperm costs about 300,000 to 600,000 won. However, as time passes, the quality of sperm can deteriorate, so it is important to strictly manage the storage period.
Singer Kim Jae-joong appeared on the YouTube channel 'Neighborhood Friend Kang Nami' last July and confessed, "I froze my sperm, but after the three-year storage period passed, I ended up discarding it." He explained, "I froze my sperm to leave healthy genes while I was still young, but the expiration date came, so I discarded it," adding, "To maintain the freshest state when freezing sperm, three years is ideal, and forcibly extending it to five years is the limit."

There is also an actress who confessed to discarding frozen eggs. Actress Myung Se-bin revealed on the 26th, "I eventually discarded the frozen eggs I had stored 10 years ago in preparation for a late marriage." Egg freezing is mainly chosen by women who want to delay marriage or pregnancy. It is ideal to start before the age of 35, and preserving more than 20 eggs before the age of 38 can increase the success rate of childbirth up to 70%. However, hormone treatments and physical and emotional burdens are significant, and frozen eggs may undergo qualitative changes after 3 to 5 years. Myung Se-bin stated, "I just gave up. I didn’t extend the storage," adding, "Age matters, and having eggs alone isn’t enough; implantation must also occur. I felt the process ahead wouldn’t be easy, so I gave up."
Maintaining the quality of sperm and eggs requires healthy lifestyle habits. Being overweight negatively affects sperm quality, so weight management is essential. Women should consume foods rich in vitamins and minerals and manage egg quality through regular exercise. Freezing sperm and eggs is an important option for future childbirth plans, but quality degradation must be considered and managed. Those considering this should make careful decisions based on sufficient information and expert consultation.
