The Democratic Party of Korea held an inauguration ceremony for the party's 'Future Governance Committee (the Committee)' chaired by Representative Lee Jae-myung. The Committee announced that it will discuss future challenges arising from climate change and the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI).

At the Committee's inauguration ceremony held at the National Assembly on the afternoon of the 27th, Representative Lee stated, "Economic inequality is intensifying due to the climate crisis, the pandemic, and changes in the global trade and security environment," adding, "In this unprecedented era of great transformation, we must take responsibility for the lives of the people and pioneer a better future." He continued, "A crisis is always an opportunity," and said, "If the government makes large-scale investments to respond to the climate crisis and builds an energy highway for a renewable energy society, it will create new jobs."

Representative Lee expressed concern, saying, "If we fail to prepare in advance and are dragged along by change, the benefits of technological development will concentrate in the hands of a few, becoming a source of conflict." He then stated, "The Democratic Party will prepare for a new leap forward with a future vision," and "We will restore the broken national vision and prepare for a better tomorrow than today."

The Committee is composed of Professor Cortland Robinson, a demography professor at Johns Hopkins University in the United States; Dr. Kim Rok-ho, former Director of the Science Department at the World Health Organization (WHO); and Professor Seo Yong-seok of the Graduate School of Future Strategy at KAIST. Assemblyman Cha Ji-ho, also a former professor at the same KAIST graduate school, participates as the general secretary.

At the inauguration ceremony, Representative Lee and Assemblyman Cha also mentioned the possibility of armed conflict such as a 'Third World War.' Representative Lee said, "We may face a very long-term and structural recession again, which could cause large-scale physical conflicts." In response, Assemblyman Cha said, "As climate change occurs globally, the sense of (military) crisis seems to be increasing worldwide," adding, "The U.S. security axis is divided between the Middle East and East Asia, but if a series of conflicts occur in the Middle East or Africa, the security axis could shift."

Assemblyman Cha further criticized the government's security policy. He said, "North Korea is very vulnerable to climate change, increasing the possibility of war on the Korean Peninsula," and added, "We need to carefully consider whether it is right for South Korea to get involved in global wars by supporting weapons as the Yoon Seok-yeol administration does (in the Russia-Ukraine war)."

Representative Lee was acquitted in the first trial on charges of perjury inducement on the 25th and has since been actively engaging in public welfare activities. At the same time, he has been sending messages opposing the government's policy direction in the field of public welfare. At the launch ceremony of the Public Welfare Council centered on self-employed and small business owners the day before, Representative Lee said, "The people are treated not as subjects of power but as objects of domination, governance, and control." On the morning of the same day, he visited a high school in Seongdong-gu, Seoul, and claimed, "The government is trying to give up on free education."
