As the installation of generative artificial intelligence (AI) service applications has surged, the monthly number of ChatGPT users in South Korea increased by 3.64 million this year.
According to the "2024 Mobile App Year-End Report" released on the 27th by app and retail analysis services WiseApp, Retail, and Goods, the average monthly number of users in their 40s who installed three apps?ChatGPT, Lytton, and A.Dot?from January to October reached 1.32 million, marking a 169% increase compared to last year. This was the highest figure among all age groups.
Users in their 20s followed with a 155% increase to 1.29 million, those in their 30s increased by 156% to 1.17 million, and users in their 50s rose by 168% to 790,000. Under-20 users increased by 194% to 750,000 during the same period, while those aged 60 and above grew by 161% to 400,000.
In particular, OpenAI's ChatGPT led the growth trend in generative AI usage. As of last month, ChatGPT had 5.26 million users, an increase of 3.64 million compared to January. During this period, only Toss (4.81 million increase) and Coupang Eats (3.89 million increase) saw a larger rise in users than ChatGPT.
The apps with the highest average monthly users in South Korea from January to October this year were KakaoTalk (48.31 million), followed by YouTube (46.63 million), Naver (44.02 million), and Coupang (31.17 million).
In terms of average monthly usage time, YouTube recorded an overwhelming first place with 108.3 billion minutes, followed by KakaoTalk (32.7 billion minutes) and Instagram (22.4 billion minutes).
