Korea Western Power was recognized by the government as an exemplary case of proactive public administration for its cooperation with Korea Gas Corporation to prevent redundant investment in gas supply facilities during the construction of a natural gas power plant.

On the 26th, Western Power announced that it had jointly received the Prime Minister's Award (Grand Prize) with Korea Gas Corporation at the "2024 Proactive Administration Best Practices Competition," co-hosted by the Ministry of Personnel Management, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, and the Office for Government Policy Coordination.

The Proactive Administration Best Practices Competition is the highest authority award in the public sector, designed to discover outstanding cases that the public can experience and to promote innovation in public service culture. The evaluation is divided into four sectors: central government, public institutions, local governments, and local public corporations.

Western Power and Korea Gas Corporation jointly submitted the case of "Preventing National Redundant Investment through the First Collaborative Construction of Power and Gas Public Infrastructure," earning them the Prime Minister's Award (Grand Prize).

This case involved the first-ever public sector collaboration between Western Power, which needed to build dedicated gas supply facilities for a natural gas power plant in the Gumi area of BukSam, North Gyeongsang Province, and Korea Gas Corporation, which needed to establish gas supply facilities in the same region to ensure stable gas supply.

Western Power and Korea Gas Corporation initially faced difficulties due to differing priorities. Western Power prioritized the "obligation to ensure stable power supply" amid a tight construction schedule, while Korea Gas Corporation focused on "securing the stability of the national natural gas supply network," leading to a deadlock.

To prevent unnecessary investment, both companies engaged in active dialogue and successfully aligned their business goals and directions, achieving both the prevention of redundant investment in social infrastructure and the stabilization of power and gas supply.

The estimated cost savings in construction investment, facility operation, and maintenance calculated by Western Power and Korea Gas Corporation amount to approximately 200 billion KRW.

The Ministry of Personnel Management evaluated that the joint construction of power and gas infrastructure by the two companies resulted in "reduced construction costs," "enhanced energy supply stability," "new city gas supply for emerging demand," and "job creation," greatly contributing to public welfare.

Lee Jeongbok, CEO of Western Power, stated, "This is an exemplary case of proactive administration that has improved public convenience by preventing national redundant investment and stabilizing power and gas supply through continuous communication and collaboration between the government and public enterprises. We will continue to closely cooperate and take on challenges to consistently discover innovative cases in the future."
