O Tae-wan Uiryeong County Governor Selected as '2024 Person Who Shined Korean Economy'

Winner of Two Awards Including the Chairman's Award of the Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee for Tourism Industry Development

O Tae-wan, the governor of Uiryeong-gun, Gyeongnam, was selected as a person who illuminated the Korean economy this year.


Uiryeong-gun announced on the 27th that Governor O Tae-wan received the 'Person Who Illuminated the Korean Economy' award at the 9th Korea Economy Illuminating Person & Management Awards held at The Plaza Hotel in Seoul on the 22nd.

The awards ceremony, hosted by Maeil Business Newspaper Media Group, was organized to highlight the achievements of individuals who contributed to the development of various fields such as economy, society, and culture through outstanding leadership and management strategies fostering change and innovation.


Governor O Tae-wan was awarded in the category of ‘Future·Value·Creation·Management’.


Governor O was praised for proactively responding to the crisis of local extinction and analyzing the living population to enhance the vitality of the regional economy.


This award for ‘Institution Head Innovation Leadership’ marks the first nationwide recognition for establishing a dedicated organization for the local extinction crisis, enacting ordinances to counter extinction, and leading policies by pioneering the issue of ‘living population’ beyond the concept of resident population.

Meanwhile, at the awards ceremony, he also received the honor of the Chairman’s Award from the National Assembly’s Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee for contributions to the development of the tourism industry in the regional festival category.


Governor O planned the world’s first ‘Rich’ themed Rich Rich Festival and was recognized for his efforts to develop a ‘top-tier tourist destination’ connecting Sotbawi Rock, which foretells the birth of a wealthy person, and the birthplace of Lee Byung-chul, the founder of Samsung Group, aiming to expand Korean tourism content sought by people worldwide.


Jeon Jae-su, Chairman of the National Assembly’s Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee, said, “The Rich Rich Festival is not simply a festival pursuing material wealth but emphasizes the social responsibility of the wealthy and aims to learn the ‘attitude toward life’ from successful people, aligning with the spirit of the current era.”


Governor O said, “At the end of the year, thanks to the residents, I received two great awards,” and added, “I will devote myself more to valuable work for future generations and exert my capabilities to increase the happiness of residents through good policies.”
