According to the police and fire authorities, at around 6:40 a.m. that day, a 25-ton dump truck rear-ended a Genesis passenger car that had slipped on the snowy road on the Seoul-bound side of the Seoul-Yangyang Expressway, just before entering the Seoseok Tunnel in Suhari, Seoseok-myeon, Hongcheon-gun. Subsequently, a Korando, an Avante, and a Santa Fe passenger car following behind collided in a chain reaction, leading to a total of five vehicles involved in the pile-up.
As a result of the accident, passenger A (81 years old) in the Genesis vehicle was transported to the hospital in cardiac arrest but passed away. The Genesis driver B (59 years old) and the Korando driver C (53 years old) were seriously injured and taken to the hospital, while four other drivers in the other vehicles sustained minor injuries. The police are investigating the detailed circumstances, believing the accident was caused by vehicles slipping on the snowy road.
