The People Power Party is accelerating discussions on extending the retirement age. On the 27th, Representative Han Dong-hoon emphasized the need to extend the retirement age at a related forum, stating, "If people want to keep working, let's reform the system to allow for retirement age extension."

At the policy forum held at the National Assembly under the party's Special Committee on Gap Reduction, Representative Han said, "The healthy life expectancy indicator has already surpassed 70 years. So, it seems clear that there is a definite need." He meant that as healthy life expectancy increases, the period during which workers can work has also lengthened.


While agreeing on the necessity of extending the retirement age, Representative Han also pointed out potential social issues that may arise from such an extension. He said, "Previously, we also discussed with the Federation of Korean Trade Unions that we need to consider the backlash from younger generations who want to enter quality jobs in large corporations and public enterprises," adding, "I think responses to that aspect are also necessary."


Jo Kyung-tae, chairman of the Gap Reduction Special Committee, said, "It is necessary to give more thought and consideration to the labor sector's stance, which the People Power Party has been passive about so far," and added, "This is not just about discussing retirement age extension, but by discussing it in depth, the People Power Party aims to view it from a warmer perspective and respond to the future."


Meanwhile, the Gap Reduction Special Committee plans to hear the labor sector's position on retirement age extension at the next second forum.
