Wando-gun, Jeollanam-do announced on the 27th that it received the Grand Prize in the evaluation of the ‘2024 Clean Jeonnam Best Village Making’ project.
The ‘Clean Jeonnam Best Village Making’ is a grassroots resident autonomy project aimed at fostering harmony and community spirit and strengthening self-governance capabilities through the process of residents leading the beautification of their villages.

This year, Jeollanam-do selected 75 'Excellent Best Villages' by evaluating resident participation, task force operation performance, promotional achievements, and exemplary cases.
Since 2022, Wando-gun has been selected as an excellent city/county for three consecutive years, and this year, five villages including Sogayong Village in Wando-eup, Gumok and Masak Villages in Nohwa-eup, Donggo Village in Sinji-myeon, and Gwanjung Village in Yaksan-myeon were selected.
Sogayong Village created a communal garden on fallow land and donated the proceeds from the sale of harvested crops to vulnerable groups. Gumok Village in Nohwa installed solar lights by a dark pond and created a nighttime walking path through landscape and environmental maintenance.
Masak Village in Nohwa has a population of 18 residents. Under the theme of ‘Island within an Island,’ they plan to create flower gardens for landscape improvement and promote a ‘Living One Week on Masakdo Island’ program with the residents’ autonomy committee in the future.
Donggo Village in Sinji created a mural street over three years with the residents’ autonomy committee, and Gwanjung Village in Yaksan produced distinctive mailboxes using images of local specialties such as chili peppers and black goats, resulting in village promotion and landscape improvement effects.
Cheon Jong-sil, Head of the Administrative Support Division, said, “The true meaning of the Best Village Making project lies in communication among neighbors, fostering community spirit, and the process of caring for one’s village,” adding, “Next year, we will pursue differentiated tasks from other cities and counties to achieve good results.”
