Reborn as a Space for Rest, Culture, and Community

Jeju Special Self-Governing Province announced on the 27th that it will actively promote the creation of the "Forest for Residents" project around the provincial government office to practice carbon neutrality and provide a resting space for residents.
This project is a plan to create a large-scale urban park by expanding Samda Park and the green space around the provincial government office into one, and the basic planning service is currently underway.
It aims to establish a safe and pleasant walking environment and practice carbon neutrality in response to the climate crisis, while being designed as a green and cultural complex space where local residents and visitors can relax and enjoy.
Reflecting local residents' opinions and public architect consulting, the final basic plan, including the scale of the park and perspective drawings, is being prepared. After detailed design next year, full-scale construction is scheduled to begin in 2026.
Once the Forest for Residents is created, the road between the green space of the provincial government office and Samda Park will be integrated into a single park. This space, which has had low usage rates until now, is planned to be transformed into a healing space in the city and a venue for various cultural events such as flea markets and festivals.
Plants that allow people to feel seasonal changes will be planted around the park, and a safe pedestrian-only road and health promotion programs will also be introduced.
Joo Sang-beom, Director of the Special Self-Governing Administration Bureau, said, "We will create the Forest for Residents as a healing space where flowers and trees harmonize, maximizing its effect as a garden in daily life," and added, "We will make it a resting, cultural, and leisure space that visitors to the provincial government office can comfortably use."
Meanwhile, Jeju Province was selected last year for the Korea Forest Service's "Living Proximity Forest Creation Project" contest (50 million KRW from the national government and 50 million KRW from the provincial government). Through this, green gardens were created on the indoor walls and rooftop of the provincial government main building, simultaneously promoting carbon neutrality and spatial innovation. The created green garden is being used as a new community space for employees.
