December 2 at City Hall, '29th Consumer Day Commemoration Event' Held

Busan City announced that according to the results of the Korea Consumer Agency's '2023 Korea Consumer Life Index' survey, the overall consumer life satisfaction in Busan was the highest nationwide.

The survey results showed that the overall consumer life satisfaction perceived by 646 Busan citizens in 2023 was 73.2 points, which is 5.1 points higher than the national average of 68.1 points, marking the highest score in the country, and an increase of 5.4 points from 67.8 points in 2021.

The city's consumer life satisfaction increased in all areas compared to 2021, with ▲hygiene and beauty scoring the highest at 77.1 points, followed by ▲housing and household goods (76.9 points) and ▲medical care (76.4 points), which also showed high satisfaction.

By sector, the overall importance of consumer life was highest in ▲food and dining at 92.9%, followed by ▲clothing at 47.1%, ▲housing and household goods at 35.9%, and ▲finance and insurance at 27.7%.

Additionally, 68.9% of Busan citizens, or 7 out of 10, used mobile shopping, and the mobile shopping problem experience rate (Busan 6.5%) showed disparities within the region, with ▲Geumjeong-gu at 35.7% and ▲Busanjin-gu at 4.2%.

The newly included survey item, ‘the most important consumer value in consumer life,’ showed that ▲quality was the highest at 89.9%, followed by ▲reasonable price (67.9%), ▲safety (60.5%), ▲convenience of purchase (44.9%), ▲eco-friendliness and sustainability (18.7%), and ▲brand image (18.3%).

The level of sustainable consumption practice among consumers in Busan was 59.2 points, higher than the national average of 57.1 points, indicating a strong practice of eco-friendly green consumption.

While those in their 40s scored well at 60.5 points, the activation of sustainable consumption practices among young people in their 20s (58.1 points) and seniors aged 60 and above (58.3 points) was found to be necessary.

Furthermore, the policy that the city should prioritize was ‘consumer education implementation,’ which was 31.3%, 6.7 percentage points higher than the national average of 24.6%.

In particular, demand was high among people in their 20s and 60s, implying the need for regional consumer administration to support sustainable practices among youth and the elderly.

On December 2 at 2 p.m., the city will hold a special lecture based on the analysis results of the ‘Busan Metropolitan City Consumer Life Specialization’ provided by the Korea Consumer Agency at the ‘29th Consumer Day Commemoration Event’ in the City Hall International Conference Hall.

The special lecture titled ‘The Future of Busan Consumers Based on Busan’s Consumer Life Index (Dr. Eunhee Ko, Korea Consumer Agency)’ will be held with about 200 attendees including citizens and consumer organization executives. The lecture will explore policy promotion plans toward a sustainable specialized city for youth and the elderly.

Before the lecture, the mayor will present commendations (9 recipients) to institutions and individuals who have contributed to the promotion of consumer rights in Busan.

Mayor Park Hyung-jun stated, “Consumer life, closely related to citizens’ lives, facilitates smooth corporate production and economic flow, and further acts as a lubricant for the national and regional economy. Going forward, the city will continue to strengthen citizens’ consumer capabilities and serve as a guardian of market order by actively preparing consumer policies tailored to local conditions and taking the lead in efforts.”
