Names, Artists' Lives, Relationships, Nationalities, etc.
A framework has been established to introduce information about Korean artists to the world.
The National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage under the Cultural Heritage Administration announced on the 27th that it has provided information on 400 artists to the online art history terminology platform "Getty Vocabularies," operated by the Getty Research Institute in the United States.
The Getty Research Institute is a leading organization in digital art history projects and the construction of art information databases. Getty Vocabularies, which it directly manages, is an international database related to art history terminology.
Since last year, the institute has been building information on Korea's art heritage and artists according to international standards. Among them, information on 400 artists, including Kim Jeong-hui (1786?1856) and Kang Hui-maeng (1424?1483), was provided to the Getty Vocabularies database "ULAN" (Union List of Artist Names), which handles artist name information. The searchable information includes the person's name (including courtesy names and pen names), life as an artist, relationships, nationality, gender, and more.
An official from the institute stated, "Next month, we plan to additionally provide information on 700 Korean artists, including Jang Seung-eop (1843?1897) and Jeon Gi (1825?1854), making it searchable." He added, "We are also discussing ways to internationally provide various digital information on Korean art heritage held by the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage through the Getty Research Portal."
The Getty Research Portal is a free online search platform operated by the Getty Research Institute. It provides digital art history materials from participating institutions of each country.
