Evaluation of 'Best Performing City' Among Gyeonggi Province Cities with Over 500,000 Residents
Following Two Consecutive Years of Top Government Joint Evaluation in the Province
Outstanding in Jobs, Welfare, and Environment... Achieved Highest Grade in 102 out of 104 Indicators
Goyang Special City, Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Lee Dong-hwan) announced on the 27th that it has once again demonstrated outstanding administrative capabilities by achieving the highest excellence for two consecutive years in the ‘2024 Gyeonggi-do City and County Comprehensive Evaluation.’
The City and County Comprehensive Evaluation is a representative assessment in the field of public administration that measures the overall administrative capacity of each local government annually. It ranks the 31 cities and counties in Gyeonggi-do by dividing them into three groups based on population size.
Goyang City was selected as the top institution by ranking first among the 10 cities with populations over 500,000 (including Suwon, Yongin, Hwaseong, Seongnam, etc.) this year as well as last year.
As a reward, the city will receive a financial incentive of 400 million KRW. Just as the 400 million KRW received in 2023 was used for projects such as safety signage in school zones and remodeling the Tomorrow Dream Factory youth space, next year the funds will also be used to promote projects for the citizens.
In August, Goyang City also achieved first place for two consecutive years in the Government Joint Evaluation conducted by Gyeonggi Province, which assesses government-linked indicators as of the end of December 2023.
It is a very rare case for a city to secure first place for two consecutive years in both the City and County Comprehensive Evaluation and the Government Joint Evaluation.
In this year’s City and County Comprehensive Evaluation, Goyang City achieved the highest grade, S grade, in 102 out of 104 evaluation indicators, except for only two.
Especially, it received outstanding scores in the fields of jobs, welfare, and environment compared to other cities and counties. Specifically, these include △expansion of senior citizen jobs △public childcare utilization rate △collection of environmental improvement charges △priority purchase rate for spreading social value, among others.
A Goyang Special City official said, “This year’s City and County Comprehensive Evaluation included new indicators that were difficult to score highly due to Goyang City’s circumstances, which was somewhat disadvantageous. However, as a result of the public officials’ relentless efforts and collaboration without giving up, we achieved first place. The staff also feel a great sense of accomplishment in breaking their own limits.”
Mayor Lee Dong-hwan of Goyang Special City stated, “I believe the consecutive good evaluations are achievements made together with over 3,500 public officials and 1.08 million citizens. We will strive to ensure that the excellent evaluations and results received externally directly benefit the citizens.”
Meanwhile, Goyang City is recognized as a city that sets the ‘standard’ in administration by standing out in all areas of city governance, including winning the National Representative Brand Award in the ‘Best City to Raise Children’ category this year, receiving the Minister’s Award for the Korea Job Awards for two consecutive years, achieving the highest excellence in pledge fulfillment evaluation for three consecutive years, and receiving the Prime Minister’s Commendation in the proposal activation evaluation.
