Son Joo-eun, chairman of the well-known domestic private education company Megastudy, is causing controversy after making inappropriate remarks during a lecture at a high school, such as saying "Having children is more important than going to college" and comparing one of his students to a sex worker.
According to JTBC's 'Incident Commander' on the 26th, Chairman Son visited a high school in Daegu on the 22nd and gave a lecture to about 500 male and female students in the 1st and 2nd grades. At the time, Son mentioned Korea's population crisis, saying, "I'm joking, but this is a serious point," and argued, "There should be a system in the university entrance special admissions that strongly grants decision-making power for university admission if a teenager gives birth."
He continued, "I hope female students will change their way of thinking a bit," adding, "Giving birth early, from late teens to early twenties, is one of the most important things you can do for this country." He emphasized, "If possible, get married quickly and have children quickly. If you can't get married, you should at least have children first." Son reportedly made these remarks while explaining the industrial system and educational changes due to the digital transformation, stating that Korean society is facing a tremendous crisis of 'population decline.'

A, who reported the video, also said, "Son mentioned the 'X-woman theory' during the lecture." Son named and introduced an anecdote about a female student he tutored in the 1980s as the 'X-woman theory' on a PowerPoint slide. Son explained, "I once told a female student who was unattractive and had poor grades, 'If you continue like this, your life will be worse than a prostitute's. Prostitutes at least get paid if they become toys, but if you continue like this, you will have to give your assets to the man you marry.'" A said, "Although the anecdote ended with the student studying hard and becoming a high-ranking public official, most students reacted, 'What kind of words are those to female students trying to study even after coming to a private high school?'" and "The atmosphere was all angry."
The school reportedly sternly warned students that "there could be disadvantages if they upload or share videos or photos of Chairman Son's lecture without permission." A school official told 'Incident Commander,' "I think there was no major problem with the overall purpose or context of Chairman Son's lecture. However, some expressions or phrases seemed a bit excessive," adding, "We will be more careful in selecting lecturers in the future."
Chairman Son stated, "If there were expressions that made students uncomfortable unintentionally while talking about the future generation's awareness change regarding the low birthrate issue and an anecdote about a student who changed her future through studying, I apologize."
