Participation from Various Sectors Including Welfare Foundations and Local Businesses
Yangcheon-gu, Seoul (Mayor Lee Gi-jae) announced on the 27th that local companies, organizations, welfare centers, religious groups, and volunteer residents have joined forces to practice social contribution by distributing a total of 48 tons (48,000 kg) of kimchi to about 7,700 low-income vulnerable households.
The Yangcheon Love Welfare Foundation plans to hold the ‘Sharing Love Kimchi Making Ceremony’ on the 10th of next month to support kimchi for low-income households in the area. This year, Mokdong Himchan Hospital, Mokmin Church, C&C Academy, Yangcheon-gu Christian Association, National and Public Daycare Center Association, and E-Mart Mokdong Branch participated, sponsoring 25,000 kg of kimchi worth 120 million KRW. The kimchi will be delivered to each neighborhood on the day of the ceremony and distributed at 5 kg per household to 5,000 households.

On the 9th, the Yangcheon-gu Facilities Management Corporation held the ‘Happiness Sharing Love Kimchi Making’ event at Mokdong Public Parking Lot, where they made kimchi together with local volunteer groups. About 300 employees of the corporation and Rotary Club District 3640 volunteers participated, delivering a total of 1,000 kg of kimchi to the Yangcheon-gu Food Bank Market Center.
Warmth also continued from local churches. On the 19th, Mokdong First Church supported 6,300 households with 5,040 kg of kimchi made directly by church members and volunteers through the winter project ‘Warm Shelter, Clothing, and Food,’ which has been ongoing for eight years. Along with this, winter clothing and electric blankets were provided to 130 vulnerable households to help them through the cold winter. Hansarang Church, located in Sinjeong-dong, also prepared 420 boxes (4,200 kg) of 10 kg kimchi and delivered them through the district office on the 22nd to be distributed to marginalized groups in the area.
Welfare centers also conducted kimchi sharing for lonely elderly and grandparent-headed families and other neighbors in need. Sinjeong Comprehensive Social Welfare Center delivered 3,000 kg of kimchi to 300 vulnerable households using proceeds from a joint bazaar. Hanbit Comprehensive Social Welfare Center held a kimchi sharing event at a senior dining hall, distributing 1,800 kg of kimchi to neighbors. Sinwol Comprehensive Social Welfare Center held a kimchi event on the 20th, delivering 1,000 kg of kimchi to 200 vulnerable households in the area. Additionally, 600 kg of kimchi sponsored by Green Umbrella and Hana Financial Sharing Foundation will be separately delivered to 60 households. Furthermore, Mokdong Comprehensive Social Welfare Center will hold a Love Kimchi event on the 28th, delivering about 2,000 kg of kimchi to 200 elderly households and others.
At 10 neighborhood community centers, organizations such as the Saemaul Women’s Association, Community Security Council, Local Autonomous Disaster Prevention Group, and Residents’ Autonomy Committee rolled up their sleeves for kimchi sharing. This winter, members of professional organizations will deliver about 1,300 heads of kimchi, totaling 3,230 kg, which they made themselves at community center dining halls and auditoriums, directly to vulnerable households including elderly residents with mobility difficulties.
Companies also joined the warm sharing, with Geumbit Saemaul Credit Union donating 1,100 kg of kimchi. The Social Cooperative Bareuni prepared 250 kg of cubed radish kimchi (kkakdugi) to deliver to low-income groups. Additionally, the Yangcheon-gu Architects Association will continue the sharing by donating 800 kg of kimchi through a kimchi sharing event with architects, extending support to marginalized neighbors.
Lee Gi-jae, Mayor of Yangcheon-gu, said, “I sincerely thank the volunteer residents and organizations who contributed their sincerity and effort to help our vulnerable neighbors prepare for a strong winter. We will promote solid and substantial welfare administration as much as the 48 tons of kimchi delivered this time, creating a warm city Yangcheon that lives together with its neighbors.”
